Nintendo FY’24 Q1 Results

Nintendo’s quarterly report dropped and the company had a fabulous showing; being their most profitable first quarter ever.

The Switch moved 3.91 million units - a fantastic result for a console in its seventh year.

Tears of the Kingdom sold 18.51 million units - insane. It is surely well over 20 million units in real time.

Mario games saw a major boost in sales due to The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold an additional 1.67 million units during the quarter.

Super Mario Odyssey sold an additional 680k units

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe sold an additional 760k units (I’ll say it again - New Super Mario Bros. Wonder is going to be a MONSTER this holiday season).

The Top 10 software titles have been shifted now that ToTK debuts on the list (Ring Fit Adventure has been knocked off the list!). Nintendo really needs to make this a top 20 or 30 list. A title would need to sell over 16 million units just to make it onto the list now.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 55.46M (+1.67M)

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 42.79M (+580K)

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 31.77M (+680K)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 30.65M (+840K)

  • Super Mario Odyssey - 26.44M (+680K)

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield - 25.92M (+100K)

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet - 22.66M (+560K)

  • Super Mario Party - 19.39M (+250K)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 18.51M (NEW!!)

  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 16.17M (+760K)

Out of the 18.51 million units of ToTK shipped and sold digitally, 15.70 million were sold through to consumer. ToTK pushed hardware adoption during the quarter and was a massive chunk of that 52.21 million units sold during the quarter. Another interesting tidbit:

Most of players who picked up ToTK were Breath of the Wild players, which is expected, but there are gamers who are picking up ToTK without having played BotW according to Nintendo’s data. I suspect there will be continued interest in BoTW - which we saw during ToTK’s release as BoTW began charting higher again.

Also, with ToTK moving Switch hardware despite BoTW being on the system bodes well for Super Mario Bros. Wonder ability to move hardware units, despite having 2D Mario and other Mario games already available on the platform.

The Switch userbase is also extremely active:

Nintendo counts an annual user as someone who fired up their console and played a game at least once during the year. The Switch base buys tons of games and they play them too.

I expect the summer to be slower quarter as there’s nothing to the magnitude of Zelda to push hardware. But Nintendo is off to a good start this fiscal year.

I’m still bullish on Nintendo this year, especially after these results. They haven’t increased their targets at all, but I still think they’ll exceed their 15 million Switch target for the year.
