Nintendo’s Q1 Financials

Nintendo revised down a couple of times this FY and the Switch didn’t do as well as I predicted at all - selling through a total of 3.06 million units this quarter and 17.97 million units for the FY. Original target was 21 million, the 19 million, then 18 million (close enough, I supposed but it technically didn’t make it).

LTD sales for the Switch now sit at 125.62 million.

Software now sits at 1.036 billion units. Congrats to Nintendo for selling over a billion pieces of software! This is the only time they’ve managed to do this (the DS just missed it!).

Speaking of software, we got data from newly released games and updated LTD totals (shot out to Mazi on Installbase for compiling this list):

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 53.79M (+1.79M)

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 42.21M (+620K)

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 31.09M (+650K)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 29.81M (+810K)

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield - 25.82M (+140K)

  • Super Mario Odyssey - 25.76M (+550K)

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet - 22.10M (+1.49M)

  • Super Mario Party - 19.14M (+350K)

  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 15.41M (+660K)

  • Ring Fit Adventure - 15.38M (+160K)

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus - 14.83M (+200K)

  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 - 12.82M (+380K)

  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - 11.38M (+560K)

  • Splatoon 3 - 10.67M (+540K)

  • Mario Party Superstars - 10.17M (+790K)

  • Nintendo Switch Sports - 9.60M (+990K)

  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land - 6.46M (+340K)

  • Mario Strikers: Battle League - 2.54M (+70K)

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - 1.86M (+50K)

  • Fire Emblem Engage - 1.61M

  • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe - 1.46M

  • Metroid Prime Remastered - 1.09M

  • Bayonetta 3 - 1.07M (+30K)

I’m really happy for Metroid Prime (being a shadow drop) and Fire Emblem: Engage (even if it isn’t outpacing Three Houses). Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has pretty weak legs as well; despite being the best game in the series gameplay-wise.

Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch units this coming fiscal year and they do not seem to confident about getting to that number… and they do not anticipate dropping the price of the system at all either. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

We’ll see the impact of Tears of the Kingdom on Switch hardware sales this week.

I’ll have impressions up soon.
