Famitsu - PSP vs NDS redux contineues in 2023

Last month, the PS5 was surging in Japan! It looked as if it would overtake the Switch in YTD sales by mid-March. That did not happen.

Over the past couple of weeks, the PS5 slowed down considerably. The Switch has not been lighting the world on fire at all either - it’s selling somewhere between it’s 2018 and 2019 numbers. In 2018, the Switch sold just over 3.4 million units YTD. In 2019, the console sold just under 4.5 million. Around ~50k may be the Switch’s baseline; as PS5 has come back down to earth. At the moment, LTD stands at:

Switch: 879,808

PS5: 823,967

Only 55,841 units separate the two.

PSP vs DS all over again indeed. It will be fun to see if the Switch, in what looks to be its last full year as Nintendo’s flagship console, can hold off the PS5 or if the PS5 will take over as market leader as Switch slowly winds down.
