Sony FY23/Q4 Results

Sony had a pretty good quarter.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Sony shipped 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units in the last quarter (bringing LTD to 59.3 million units - less than a million units behind PS4 launch aligned)

  • PlayStation 5 reached a total of 20.8 million units shipped this fiscal year, missing revised projection by only 200k units

  • Helldivers 2 has become Sony's fastest-selling title ever, with 12 million units sold in 12 weeks, surpassing the record previously set by God of War Ragnarök.

  • Sony projects 18 million PS5 units shipped for FY 2024

It’s safe to say 2023 was PlayStation 5’s peak year. The initial projection of 25 million units was way too bullish. Although Sony narrowly missed its revised PS5 expectations, the 20.8 million units sold this past fiscal year is higher than any fiscal year total posted by the PS4 (it hit 20 million units just once in FY2016).

How will Sony reach 18 million units this year with a lack of AAA first party software? How will the rumored/inevitable PS5 pro effect hardware sales?

Time will tell!
