A Quick Look Through Nintendo’s FY Report
On May 10th, Nintendo released their Q4/FY 2022 Earnings. The results were pretty impressive.
Switch has reached a total 107.65 million units life-to-date.
That is HUGE.
I remember when the Switch was unveiled 2016 and subsequent predictions for lifetime sales that came during the months a were pretty grim by most forum dwellers. This infamous GAF thread will forever be a classic.
Nintendo is expecting 21 million units to be sold from 4/1/22 - 3/31/23. That would put the Switch at 128.65 million total sales at the end of the 2023 FY - putting it ahead of the PS4 and the Gameboy. The chip shortage is a major issue still, but I think there’s a good chance Nintendo may be able to beat that forecast.
The updated software sales totals are through the roof as well:
Pokémon Legends: Arceus - 12.64M (NEW!) - Fantastic start for this new style of Pokemon!
Kirby and the Forgotten Land - 2.65M (NEW!) - 2.65 million in only about seven days of sales.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 45.33M (+1.98M) - The new expansion is just going to keep pushing this game. There was a time back in 2020 when I thought New Horizons would catch it but that was put to rest in Nintendo’s next quarterly report that year.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 38.64M (+1.02M)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 28.17M (+770K)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 26.55M (+750K) - A 30 million selling Zelda game. Mind blown and so well deserved. Zelda may not have ever been a double-digit million selling franchise, but it has a huge, dedicated, and emotionally involved fan base who absolutely adore the series. Nintendo finally struck gold and expanded the franchise to so many more people.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl - 14.65M (+680K)
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 13.31M (+590K) - This game sold 5.82 million units on Wii U and it has a shot at quietly making it’s way to 20 million units now on Switch. Sheesh!
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - 9.43M (+580K)
Ring Fit Adventure - 14.09M (+560K) - What a phenomenal breakout success! I rather enjoy the game myself too!
Super Mario Odyssey - 23.50M (+480K) - You know, a few DLC worlds with a gazillion moons to find within them would’ve really given this game a push
Luigi's Mansion 3 - 11.43M (+390K)
Super Mario Party - 17.78M (+390K)
Pokémon Sword/Shield - 24.27M (+370K)
Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain - 1.59M (+310K)
Pokemon: Let's Go! - 14.53M (+200K)
Metroid Dread - 2.90M (+160K) - I was really hoping this would have officially reach >3million. It’s probably already there by now but it was so close - only 100k away!
Mario Party Superstars - 6.88M (+1.45M)
Mario Golf: Super Rush - 2.35M (+90K)
Mario Golf: Super Rush - 2.35M (+90K)
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD - 3.91M (+60K)
Miitopia - 1.68M (+50K)
WarioWare: Get It Together! - 1.27M (+30K)
Splatoon 2 - 13.30M
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics - 4.22M
New Pokémon Snap - 2.40M (excludes Japan)
These software numbers are amazing. I mean, just look at the Wii U’s top 10 software sales and see how comparatively low their LTDs are. What a turnaround.
The Switch will sell well over one billion pieces of software - something Nintendo has never done before - only the DS got somewhat close.
I do think the Switch will meet or exceed Nintendo’s 21 million forecast. That would be amazing for a console in its 6th year.
