Nintendo’s Q3 Financial Report

Nintendo’s FY23 Q3 report dropped and there are some interesting tidbits to be had.

Install Base forum member ggx2ac did a wonderful job compiling the data into one nice post.

Some key takeaways:

  • Nintendo Switch LTD now sits at 122.55 million units sold.

  • Switch sold 8.23 million units during the holiday quarter

  • Nintendo revised their Switch hardware sales forecast down again, this time from 19 million to 18 million.

  • Switch has officially passed the Gameboy and PS4 in total hardware units sold

Nintendo revising sales expectations down from 21 million, to 19 million, and now 18 million, is a bit jarring. I personally do not see how that Bloomberg article about Nintendo increasing Switch production this upcoming fiscal year checks out. Even if Nintendo has some surprise in store, I cannot fathom what that could be for them to increase production. Perhaps a price cut of some sort. But until I see Nintendo’s upcoming forecast, I’m taking the Bloomberg article with a grain of salt.

Updated software totals (+ sales in quarter ending 12/31/22):

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 52.00M (+3.59M)

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 41.59M (+1.42M)

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 30.44M (+910K)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 29.00M (+1.21M)

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield - 25.68M (+310K)

  • Super Mario Odyssey - 25.21M (+810K)

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet - 20.61M

  • Super Mario Party - 18.79M (+440K)

  • Ring Fit Adventure - 15.22M (+350K)

  • Pokemon: Let's Go! - 15.07M (+260K)

  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 14.75M (+1.45M since March 31, 2022)

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus - 14.63M (+720K)

  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 - 12.44M (+1.01M since March 31, 2022)

  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - 10.82M (+1.39M since March 31, 2022)

  • Splatoon 3 - 10.13M (+2.23M)

  • Mario Party Superstars - 9.38M (+1.31M since September 30, 2022)

  • Nintendo Switch Sports - 8.61M (+2.46M)

  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land - 6.12M (+850K)

  • Mario Strikers: Battle League - 2.47M (+300K)

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - 1.81M (+90K)

  • Bayonetta 3 - 1.04M

I am happy for Bayonetta 3 (over a million sold last quarter!), Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (slowed down a great deal last quarter but closing in on 2 million), and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (selling over 20 million units in a month and half is just ridiculous). Breath of the Wild is closing in on 30 million on Switch alone! Tears of the Kingdom is going to destroy us all in May.

There’s a lot of talk around the interwebs around whether or not the Switch will make it to DS/PS2 number. It all depends on how Nintendo plays this going forward... I’ll have a better idea of where I stand on that debate once I see how much Nintendo plans to ship next fiscal year.
